ein offenes Datenformat (oft spricht man auch von Beschreibungssprache) für die Beschreibung des Inhalts eines strukturierten Datenbereichs, etwa einer Datenbank oder einer Website, und den Datenaustausch über Anwendungsgrenzen hinweg. Beispiele für Metaformate sind die Auszeichnungssprache SGML oder im Grafikbereich die Seitenbeschreibungssprache PostScript.
